Spencer Bulkeley Wynn, 3 Lord Newborough, by Robert Hughes, LlanaelhaearnThe most important of the smaller landed families with interests in the slate industry are the Wynne family of Glynllifon, especially Sir Thomas Wynn (1736-1807), the first Lord Newborough.  He challenged the rights of the Crown.  His son was Thomas John Wynn (1802-1852), the second Lord Newborough, and his brother, Spencer Bulkeley Wynn (1803-88) the third Lord Newborough, right. Their slate interests were mainly in Dyffryn Nantlle, Dyffryn Conwy, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Corwen.
